Rho value

The rho values (2.78 overall, 3.78 for reduction to the cis product and 1.96 for reduction to the trans), determined from a study of the rates of reduction with NaBH4 of a series of 4-substituted cyclohexanones, have been interpreted as supporting a transition state late in the reaction.Other groups have observed positive rho values (2.5 to 3.1) for the reduction with NaBH4 of fluorenones and acetophenones. Vinyl cations have been postulated as intermediates in the aqueous acetone solvolysis of 257 (214). Unimolecular kinetics were observed, and the sole products of solvolysis were the corresponding amides, 258. It is not intended that the equations of this study be used to supplant the much more elegant molecular orbital calculations, both semiempirical and ab initio, and the mechanical modeling studies of radical forming reactions. However, it may be possible to make some hypotheses about differences in mechanisms between reaction families, based on the values of the slopes in Table IV. The slopes could be considered "sensitivity factors" (like rho values) for measuring the relative magnitude of transition state effects (U) and reactant state effects (N) on the rates of the four reactions of this study. 

However, the effects on the rates in nonpolar solvent systems is dramatically larger and often of apparent contradiction. For example, the Hammett rho value for the oxidation of substituted methyl cinnamates and cinnamic acids by tetrabutylammonium permanganate in methylene chloride solutions is positive (33,49). See Figure lb. However, a rho value of converse sign (-0.6) is obtained from a Taft plot (Figure Ic) for the oxidation of vinyl ethers in aqueous tetrahydrofuran (33,50). For many other compounds the Hammett relationships are no longer linear, but concave upward ... 

Three important and interrelated observations were made Firstly, it was found that the Hammett rho value is substantially larger when the solvent is acetone (1.43), than when it is methylene chloride (0.95). Alkyllithium-transition metal halide catalysis is completely different from the sodium ketyl and alfin catalysis. Natta, Danusso, Scanesi and Macchi (36) have found that the polymerization of styrene and substituted styrenes by titanium tetrachloride-triethyl aluminum catalysts was different from the above anionic systems. A plot of the log of the rate of the polymerization against Hammett s sigma constant produced a straight line with a rho value of —1.0. Electron releasing groups facilitated this polymerization.
