Mangrove tannin extract or cutch obtained from the barks of Rhizophora and Bruguiera spp. (Rhizophoraceae) was used for centuries in tropical countries to preserve cotton or linen clothing, sails, and fishing nets. Cutch and other tannin extracts were widely used for the latter purpose until recently, when the older fabrics were replaced by nylon. [Pg.7]
