Retinoid receptors, reduction

CRABP-II and RA-4 hydroxylase are two genes that contain functional RAREs in their promoter and are thus induced by t-RA in human skin [31, 34]. However, if the skin is irradiated with UV two to six hours before topical application of t-RA, induction of the two gene transcripts is blocked [34]. This indicates that the reduction of RAR and RXR proteins by UV results in functional impairment of receptor-dependent retinoid responsiveness in human skin. Treatment of skin with RA for 24 h prior to UV irradiation reduces receptor loss and markedly accelerates receptor recovery. The mechanisms by which UV reduces retinoid receptors, and... [Pg.155]
