Resistor Color Code

Obtain six colored-coded resistors from your instructor and prepare a three-column table in your notebook for recording the color code, the resistance as ascertained from the color code, and the resistance as ascertained by measurement with the multimeter. The color code consists of colored stripes that encircle the cylindrical shape, as shown in Figure 6.14. Also obtain from your instructor a resistor color code wheel (e.g., Radio Shack catalog number 271-1210) and determine the value of all your resistances as ascertained from the color code. For example, if the colors of the stripes left to right as viewed above are red, violet, yellow, and gold, the resistance is 270,000 Q. Record the values in your table. [Pg.169]

Fixed resistors are color coded to identify their resistance values. They are color coded rather than having their values printed right on their bodies for two reasons. First, the resistors are only % inch long. Second, they re cylindrical. In other words. It is rather difficult to print on them (and the print would be difficult to read at that size anyway). [Pg.10]

Find the 100 ohm (brown-black-brown) resistor. Note that with inexpensive resistors (the author will resist the temptation to use the word "cheap" or even worse adjectives ), "brown" often looks somewhat like purple or red, especially when viewed with fluorescent light or sunlight. Using the multimeter as an ohmmeter, and calibrating it for "zero ohms," measure the resistance, to make sure that the color code is being read properly. The measured resistance should be 100, plus or minus 10% if the fourth band is silver, which could be anywhere between 90 and 110 ohms. Then find the 330 ohm resistor (orange-orange-brown) and measure its resistance also. Set the multimeter to "OFF."... [Pg.40]

Obtain information about what die colors on an electrical resistor mean. Create a table showing the electrical resistor codes. Your table should have a column with colors Black, Brown, Red, Orai, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet, Gr, White, Gold, and Silver, and a column showing the values. Imagine that you are making this table for others to use therefore, include at least two examples of how to read the codes on electrical resistors at the bottom of your tdile. [Pg.74]
