Resistance to abrasion by studded tyres

Resistance to abrasion by studded tyres, when required, is carried out on cylindrical specimens in accordance to CEN EN 12697-16 (2004). The specimens are prepared as for void content determination. 

The resistance to abrasion by studded tyres, expressed as maximum abrasion value, in millilitres, should range from 20 to 60, assigned to 10 categories from Abr 2o to Abr gg (see CEN EN 13108-2 2008). 

This requirement is exclusively used by north European countries that allow or impose the use of studded tyres during winter months.

Finally, there may be a need to determine its resistance to abrasion by studded tyres. 

At the target mixture, the following empirical properties should be determined void content, voids filled with bitumen, binder drainage, water sensitivity, resistance to permanent deformation and, when required, resistance to abrasion by studded tyres.

The test to determine resistance to wear of aggregate by abrasion from studded tyres test was developed in Finland, Norway and Sweden. In these countries, studded tyres are permitted and used during the winter period. 

In some HPC application the abrasion resistance is important. The important studies and field experiments carried out by Gjorv et al. [23] contribute much to this question. The authors examined abrasion on the specially made highway pavement exposed to heavy traffic with studded tyres. The results are shown in Fig. 10.3.
