Reset rate

The speed of the controller is adjusted by the proportional band and reset rate (proportional and integral gains). These parameters also influence the stability of the control loop. All control loops are limited to a gain of less than one at their critical frequency. Higher closed-loop gain will make the loop unstable.

The maximum deviation etc. of the controlled variable is determined by the settings of both Kc and r, which can be keyed into an MBC system as required. A second knob is provided on a stand-alone controller and is calibrated either in terms of r, min or 1/T>(min)-1. The latter is called the reset rate. 

Integral Action. Control action is proportional to the sum, or integral, of all previous errors. This controller eliminates offset. Some control textbooks refer to the reset rate, which is defined as 1/t/.

It can be seen from the ideal equation that the reset rate, /TiJA, is the number of times per minute that the integral action repeats the proportional action, and the rate time, Td, is the time that the derivative mode advances the control action over that of the proportional mode alone. 

Some manufacturers do not calibrate their controllers in terms of r, but in terms of its reciprocal, 1/t/ (repeats per minute), which is known as the reset rate. 

For a PI controller with a proportional band of 25% and a reset rate of 0.05 repeats per minute, what is the proportional gain of the controller and how many minutes will it take to change the controller output the same amount as the gain for a fixed amount of error ... 

The value of / (integral action) is set by % (integral time constant) in minutes in some controllers, or the reciprocal, /% as reset rate in repeats/minute, in other controllers.
