Since the next century is not too far away, one may find some improvement of the situation analysed by J0rgensen, and indeed, in recent years much progress has been made to include relativistic effects and electron correlation effects in quantum-chemical electronic structure calculations for heavy-element systems like atoms and molecules of lanthanides and actinides. Two extensive bibliographies of the relativistic theory of atoms and molecules for the years 1916-1985 and 1986-1992 have been published by Pyykko (1986, 1993). The fact that each of the two volumes contains more than 3000 references highlights the fast growth of the fields of relativistic atomic structure...
