The faster the fragments of a bomb or a shell fly, the more damage they might cause to a target. It is important for this reason to be able to determine their velocities and this info will be useful in detg the relative brisance of the expl with which the projectile is filled... 

A recent study of the role of Al in expl mixts is that of Cook and co-workers(Ref 42). The low relative "brisance of aluminized explosives has been attributed in the past to incomplete reaction of Al at the Chapman -Jouguet plane," and the high blast potential to after-burning of the Al. Thus, early shaped charge studies indicated that Al acts effectively as a diluent as far as the end effect is concerned. More careful studies by Cook showed, however, that Al lowers the detonation pressure and velocity even more than an ideal diluent. The effective endothermic reaction of Al in the deto n wave is shown in the following results of deton pressures measured by the shaped charge method ...

The determination of the brisance is based on the assumption that the lead cylinder compression is proportional to the brisance of an explosive charge. The brisance of an explosive may be expressed either directly via the deformation of the lead cylinder or as a relative brisance in relation to a reference... 

As stated, the brisance of the tested explosive may be expressed as relative brisance relating to a reference explosive, both treated under the same testing conditions. The relative brisance is obtained as a ratio between the decreases of the cylinder height produced by the detonation of the tested and reference explosives. 

The brisance of a tested explosive is expressed means of units of crushing (according to Table 2.11) or as a relative brisance with respect to a reference explosive.

The relative brisance obtained by this method is comparable to the relative brisance obtained by other methods. However, the test results obtained by this method may be advantageous in a different way as well. Namely, since the beginning of the 20th century, attempts have been made in order to relate the term brisance to some fundamental detonation parameter of explosives. Consequently, the assumption of Taffanel and Dautriche, and later of Becker (cited in Smith, 1967), was made that the detonation pressure is a predominant factor in the determination of the brisance of an explosive. This assumption was proved id by further research. Becker even suggested that the term brisance had outlived its usefulness and should be therefore deleted from modern explosive terminology since it could be defined as the detonation pressure.
