Projected emissions from the waste sector were based on levels of regional waste generation and on the implementation of Regional Waste Management Plans. The implementation of these plans has resulted in increased recycling rates and this trend is projected to continue. However due to the time lag in decomposition (CH4 emissions from landfills peak three to seven years after materials are deposited) the benefits of this recycling will not accrue immediately. The uncertainty regarding the diversion of waste from landfills to planned municipal waste incinerators also complicated projections in this sector. [Pg.165]

Practice-based material management depends predominantly on regional material flow analyses. Pioneer studies on this concept have been conducted at the Technical University of Zurich. Under the term Metabolism of the Anthroposphere (Bac-cini and Brunner 1991), the investigations concentrate primarily on the flows of material in closely settled areas. [Pg.192]

The purpose of this chapter is to present and discuss results from a study on how chemicals are framed in the contemporary press in Sweden and Poland. These two EU countries in the Baltic Sea Region have different capacities for managing the risks involved in the past and present use of chemicals. We study the content and form of media texts as well as the journalists own narratives about their work. We regard the combination of these empirical materials as an advantage in the study of media framing. [Pg.47]
