Record Identification

The ability to trace the history, application, use, and location of an individual article or its characteristics through recorded identification numbers. 

Traceability is the capability of finding the history, use, or location of an article by means of a recorded identification. 

Where traceability is specified, the product and subassemblies of the product have unique recorded identification. 

In many instances operating system software has already been developed and is offered as a fundamental part of the computer system ready for application software to be developed or configured. In such cases it is prudent to establish the existence of the respective software quality assurance plans and procedures and the design, development, and testing records. Identification and examination of this documentation can be conducted and recorded as part of the supplier audit. (See Sec. VI.)...

Codex has defined traceability as The ability to trace the history, application or location of an entity by means of recorded identifications . Traceability is closely linked to product identity, but it can also relate to the origin of materials and parts, product processing history, and the distribution and location of the product after delivery. On the basis of this definition, it is possible to show that traceability is a recognised process in adopted Codex texts and texts under elaboration, even if the word traceability has not been used. A recent report from the Codex Secretariat cited some 13 examples of adopted or proposed texts that are either based on, or acknowledge, traceability. Codex has identified consumer confidence as one aspect that is linked to traceability.
