The present review describes recent advances in quinazoline chemistry, some of which are but modem applications of earlier methods, whereas others strike out on new, and sometimes surprising, pathways. The structure of the cation of the parent substance, quinazoline, has only recently been made clear, and it has become evident that covalent hydration is a phenomenon widely distributed throughout the quinazoline series. With this fact in mind, it seems better to set forth the newly found properties of quinazolines before proceeding to an account of advances in synthesis.

It is particularly important to study process phenomena under dynamic (rather than static) conditions. Most current analytical techniques are designed to determine the initial and final states of a material or process. Instmments must be designed for the analysis of materials processing in real time, so that the cmcial chemical reactions in materials synthesis and processing can be monitored as they occur. Recent advances in nuclear magnetic resonance and laser probes indicate valuable lines of development for new techniques and comparable instmmentation for the study of interfaces, complex hquids, microstmctures, and hierarchical assemblies of materials. Instmmentation needs for the study of microstmctured materials are discussed in Chapter 9. 

A number of excellent reports which deal with synthesis of optically active phosphine ligands are available to date, and have been referenced in this chapter. Therefore it is not the intention here to overlap with them, but rather to describe recent advances in the field. Thus, this chapter is intended to serve as a review to the preparation of some efficient P-chirogenic compounds which have been developed over the past ten years, by either resolution or asymmetric synthesis. Abstract Many similarities between the chemistry of carbon and phosphorus in low coordination numbers (i.e.,CN=l or 2) have been established. In particular, the parallel between the molecular chemistry of the P=C bond in phosphaalkenes and the C=C bond in olefins has attracted considerable attention. An emerging area in this field involves expanding the analogy between P=C and C=C bonds to polymer science. This review provides a background to this new area by describing the relevant synthetic methods for P=C bond formation and known phosphorus-carbon analogies in molecular chemistry. Recent advances in the addition polymerization of phosphaalkenes and the synthesis and properties of Tx-con-jugated poly(p-phenylenephosphaalkene)s will be described.
