Reactor Type and Performance.— The influence of the reactor type and its performance on the polymers produced is beginning to receive increasing attention in the scientific literature. Gerrens, and Ray and Laurencehave extensively reviewed the field of polymerization engineering. The need for close attention to the manufacturing process in relation to product structure and performance has been discussed by Sack and medium-size anionic polymerization

As might be expected, the patent literature contains a great deal of information on the control of copolymerization processes. Typically, Torigoe et claim that it is possible to control the molecular weight distribution in the copoly-merization of buta-1,3-diene with styrene by means of the stirring rate of the reactor and this is by no means the only claim to the control of molecular weight. Others have described aspects of composition control or control of sequence distribution. -
