Reaction with fluonnated ketones

Four-membered heterocycles are easily formed via [2-I-2] cycloaddition reac tions [65] These cycloaddmon reactions normally represent multistep processes with dipolar or biradical intermediates The fact that heterocumulenes, like isocyanates, react with electron-deficient C=X systems is well-known [116] Via this route, (1 lactones are formed on addition of ketene derivatives to hexafluoroacetone [117, 118] The presence of a trifluoromethyl group adjacent to the C=N bond in quinoxalines, 1,4-benzoxazin-2-ones, l,2,4-triazm-5-ones, and l,2,4-tnazin-3,5-diones accelerates [2-I-2] photocycloaddition processes with ketenes and allenes [106] to yield the corresponding azetidine derivatives Starting from olefins, fluonnaied oxetanes are formed thermally and photochemically [119, 120] The reaction of 5//-l,2-azaphospholes with fluonnated ketones leads to [2-i-2j cycloadducts [121] (equation 27)... 

Mixtures of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and tetrahydrofuran are successfully used as fluonnating agents to convert 1,1,2-trifluoro-l-alken-3-ols, easily prepared from bromotrifluoroethene via lithiation followed by the reaction with aldehydes or ketones, to 1,1, l,2-tetrafluoro-2-alkenes The yields are optimal with a 5 1 ratio of hydrogen fluoride to tetrahydrofuran The fluonnation reaction involves a fluoride ion-induced rearrangement (SN2 mechanism) of allylic alcohols [65] (equation 40)... 

Selective fluonnation in polar solvents has proved commercially successful in the synthesis of 5 fluorouracil and its pyrimidine relatives, an extensive subject that will be discussed in another section Selective fluonnation of enolates [47], enols [48], and silyl enol ethers [49] resulted in preparation of a/phn-fluoro ketones, fieto-diketones, heta-ketoesters, and aldehydes The reactions of fluorine with these functionalities is most probably an addition to the ene followed by elimination of fluonde ion or hydrogen fluoride rather than a simple substitution In a similar vein, selective fluonnation of pyridmes to give 2-fluoropyridines was shown to proceed through pyridine difluondes [50]... 

Fluoroolefins may he prepared by the reaction of Wittig reagents and other pho sphorus-containtng y tides with fluorinated carbonyl compounds. (A discussion of the fluorinated Wittig reagents or other fluonnated phosphorus reagents with nonfluorinated carbonyl compounds is on page 581.) Tnphenylphosphoranes, derived from alkyltriphenyl phosphonium salts, react with 1,1,1-trifluoroacetone [3/] or other trifluoromethyl ketones [32, iJ] (equation 26) (Table 10).

Rearrangement of fluorine with concomitant nng opening takes place m fluonnated epoxides Hexafluoroacetone can be prepared easily from perfluo-ropropylene oxide by isomerization with a fluonnated catalyst like alumina pre treated with hydrogen fluoride [26, 27, 28] In ring-opening reactions of epoxides, the distribution of products, ketone versus acyl fluoride, depends on the catalyst [29] (equation 7) When cesium, potassium, or silver fluoride are used as catalysts, dimenc products also are formed [29]...
