Third-Order Near-Resonance Nonlinearities in Dithiolenes and Rare Earth Metallocenes... [Pg.613]

The nonlinear refractive index, r, linear absorption, a, and two photon absorption coefficient, jS, of metal dithiolenes and rare earth metallocenes have been measured at 1064 nm using 100 ps and 10 ns pulses. These measurements have shown resonance enhanced molecular nonlinearities of 10M05 times those of carbon disulphide can be obtained. Figures of merit based on the nonlinear refractive index and the linear and two photon absorption coefficients are within the limits required for devices. [Pg.613]

Two classes of material will be described here - the metal dithiolenes and rare earth metallocenes. In the metal dithiolenes a strong, low energy pi-pi transistion occurs in the near IR (9.10). This can be tuned from about 700 nm to 1400 nm by altering the metal ion, substituents or charge state of the dithiolene. The dithiolenes are particularly attractive because of their optical stability which has been exploited in their use as laser Q-switch materials. In the rare earth complexes the near IR band is provided by/-/transistions of the rare earth ion rather than the cyclopentadienyl ring structure various nonlinear optical phenomena have been observed in glasses incorporating similar ions. Previous studies have shown that dicyclopentadienyl complexes such as ferrocene have off-resonant nonlinearities similar to nitrobenzene or carbon disulphide (11-13)... [Pg.614]

Related to these catalysts are the systems based on lanthanide metal systems or rare earth metal complexes [46, 47]. The main problem with these catalyst systems is their instability. When the catalyst solution is prepared by reachng a metallocene with an organolithium compound in a polar solvent, the prepared catalyst soluhon is unstable and decomposes quickly, even under a nitrogen atmosphere. The activity of these catalysts can be high only if the catalyst is added to the polymer soluhon immediately after preparation. Attempts have been made to overcome the stability problem by using an additive in the system to improve the stability and the activity of the catalyst [33-35, 41, 57, 58, 61]. Re-... [Pg.564]

Laser flash photolysis has also been used to study the photophysics and photochemistry of metallocene-containing cryptands and their complexes with rare earth eations [69]. The metallocene moiety was shown to act as an efficient centre for the radiationless deactivation of the lanthanide excited state. Detailed time-resolved studies permitted the characterisation of the coordination chemistry about Dy " within the cryptate and showed, once again, that the functions within the host cryptand primarily responsible for coordination of the guest cation were the amide carbonyl groups. [Pg.295]
