The measurements were made along the cracks with an average step size of 3 mm. The predictions were calculated from a position -15 mm to + 15 ram for set 1, from -40 mm to + 40 mm for set 2 and from -25 mm to + 25 mm for set 3. The impedance change has been calculated at 1mm intervals in the range. Taking into account the symmetry of the configuration, only half of the predictions need to be calculated. 

In this case the probe diameter and the slot length are of similar size. The material chosen has penetration depth of 0.7 ram at the given frequency of 16.9 kHz. The slot depth is 7 times larger than the penetration depth. 

In Lakestani (10) modelling work performed within the PISC III project is validated against experiments. Figure 1 shows the pulse echo response from the lower edge of a 10 mm vertical strip-like crack at centre depth 55 mm. Becker et al. (11) have performed extensive experiments on surface-breaking cracks, tilting both the cracks or the back-side. The cracks are like a half ellipse, but could presumably be reasonably approximated by a strip-like crack. Figure 3 shows a comparison between the experiments and UTDefect for a 2.54 mm crack with varying tilt. The thickness of the plate with the crack is 15.24 ram. The probe is a circular 45 SV probe with frequency 2.25 MHz and diameter 12.7 mm. The experiments are calibrated with a notch but this is presently not... 

Because of the large thickness x-rayed by high-current betatron (more than 1500 ram on plastic) the picture of defect situated near the front wall of the sample is too increased what makes difficult to detect in practice real dimensions of the defect. But there is a possibility of stereosurvey due to existence of two radiation beams simultaneously generated by betatron. 

The Pascal code was updated to handle four channels. To follow the inspection speed all raw measuring data were captured and stored in the computer. All data for one coil could be stored in the computer memory (RAM) and transferred to the disk before inspection of the next coil. Evaluation of the data could be performed on-line or later using a special evaluation program. 

Wastage does not have to be dramatic to be easily observed on a full coverage scan. Figure 14 and 15 show a tube with 0,2 ram of eccentricity that has been in service for two years and has 0,15 mm of wastage near the drum. New tubes are good indicators to determine wastage rates as the scans are very clean without noise of uneven rough corrosion.

Because the transputer has a 32-bit processor and fast access to considerable quantities of on-chip RAM, it has been called a computer on a chip. Transputers are inherently faster than microprocessors, which have to refer to RAM outside the chip on which they reside. Thus the 100-nsec cycle time used in the above illustration may be only 50 nsec when carried out on the transputer chip. 

The memory units within the computer — known as random access memory (RAM) — must be capable of change as needed to run software programs. 

Most computers have far more RAM than ROM, and the more they have, the more tasks can be carried out.
