The FTP emissions test demonstrated that the 350 ceramic preconverter outperformed the 400 SS metallic preconverter of identical volume after both 60 and 120 hours of aging in exhaust configurations 2 and 3. The average shell temperature for ceramic preconverter is 200°C lower than that of the mantle for metallic preconverter indicating that the former retains more exothermic heat due to mat insulation and promotes early light-off of the main converter. The metallic preconverter radiates heat to surrounding environment and is less effective in transmitting exothermic heat to the main converter. [Pg.322]

Radiation is regarded by many people with special fear. Of course, everyone encounters radiation from many sources throughout life and there is radiation in our own bodies, from outer space and from our surroundings, with which our bodies appear to cope extremely well. The background levels vary considerably from place to place, but the records do not show any correlation between the incidents of radiation-related diseases (cancer and leukaemia) and the level of background radiation. All nuclear plants involve some release of radioactive material, but the effect on the environment corresponds to a very small fraction of the normal background, even near the plant. The effect of radiation depends on its intensity, duration and type and the age, food and living habits of individuals. [Pg.3]

Nuclear accidents at Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania, in 1979 and Chernobyl, Ukraine, in 1986 had a devastating effect on public opinion in the United States and, to a smaller degree, elsewhere in the world. At Three Mile Island only about 50 curies of radiation were released to the environment and there were no casualties. The explosion at Chernobyl was a very different story. About 100 million curies were released, leading to at least 31 fatalities. Moreover, 135,000 people were permanently evacuated from the region surrounding the reactor. Since then, all the other reactors at Chernobyl—three, in addition to the one that exploded—have been permanently shut down. [Pg.581]
