Radiation induced synthesis

A great number of reaction types have been investigated, the majority involve radical initiated organic chain reactions. A limited number of radiation induced synthesis has, however, been developed to the pilot plant or industrial scale. Examples of rqxrrted industrial synthesis are sulfoxidation and sulfochlorination of hydrocarbons for deterg t production and polymerization of ethene.

However, the competition for ejoiv" can be minimized by suitable choice of concentration of and the nonmetallic component (like CS2, Se, RSH, etc.) facilitates the generation of HX species. To illustrate, radiation-induced synthesis of CdS where cysteine has been used as thiol group may be considered with rate constant values for possible reactions as quoted in Table 23.3. Even if Cd " reacts with aqueous electron, its redox potential is quite low, E°(Cd VCd+)=-1.8 V NHE (Mostafavi et al. 2000), so that it acts as an electron relay toward thiol group of cysteine. H and OH radicals are scavenged by thiol itself as given in following reactions.

Despite pure Cu production, photoreduction is not free from either the formation of impurities (i.e. Cu and CU2O composites) or the agglomeration of Cu-NPs. Polymers or surfactants are required to act as protective agents. It is hkely that this radiation-induced synthesis wiU attract further attention in the future.
