Expression (3.7) allows the continuously compounded yield to maturity r t, T) to be derived. For a zero-coupon, it reduces to (3-5). In the academic literature, X], which is used in mathematics to calculate sums of a countable number of objects, is replaced by J, the integral sign, which is used for an infinite number of objects. (See Neftci (2000), pages 59-66, for an introduction to integrals and their use in quantitative finance.)... 

Quantitative finance uses statistical models to predict the financial returns, or gains, of certain types of securities such as stocks and bonds. These models can help build more complex types of securities known as derivatives. Although derivatives are often not well understood outside of the finance industry, they have a powerful effect on the economy and can influence everyday situations such as a bank s ability to loan money to a person buying a new home. 

Stochastic calculus is used heavily in quantitative finance, a significant employer of numerate engineers. In Problem 6.B.5, we solved the Black-Scholes equation for the fair value of an option. Here, we show how this equation is obtained, through stochastic calculus.

There are three levels of equivalence for classifying products, each submitted to an identical maximum level of public financing chemical equivalence, pharmacological equivalence and therapeutic equivalence. The first level entails establishing groups for the same active ingredient, which at the same time include both generics and brand-name pharmaceuticals whose patent has expired. This is the system applied in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Spain. It encompasses bio-equivalent products with identical qualitative or quantitative composition, pharmaceutical form, dose, administration method and presentation . 

If portable rechargeable batteries that have been sold with EEE for the last ten to fifteen years are not introduced in MSW streams, their presence in other streams needs to be identified and evaluated quantitatively. The work carried out by two national collection programs for spent batteries and by CollectNiCad is presented in this chapter. (CollectNiCad is an industry initiated and financed program with a commitment to collect 5,000 tonnes of Ni-Cd batteries in 4 years [1999-2003]). It demonstrates the willingness of the portable rechargeable battery industry to clearly identify the presence of its products in the various market positions and waste streams (Figure 1). A consumer survey made on the hoarding effect in France and the evaluation of quantities of batteries in MSW in France and the Netherlands will be illustrated. 

The number and size of fallen angels in the recent past show the importance of independent buy-side research. Internal ratings might help investors to generate investment decisions which avoid fallen angels or to sell their exposure early enough before the corporate bond s price deteriorates. Furthermore, quantitative models have helped us to react very quickly to relevant information such as an announced debt financed takeover to adjust our internal ratings.
