Quality control Pareto chart

The preceding examples depict the use of Pareto charts in quality and manufacturing. However, these charts are applicable to almost any job or operation. We have seen them used in manufacturing, quality control, inventory control, purchasing and personnel. Think about your personal finances for a minute. More than likely, at least 80% of your income is Utilized for 20%, or less, of your budgeted items. 

The check sheet is a simple and useful tool that is often used in the early stages of a quality control program. It provides a uniform and consistent means for data collection and analysis. Like many of the traditional tools, the check sheet is defect oriented and is used to classify the types of defects frequently found for a product or service. It is used to spot problems areas by identifying defect types that frequently occur. As a result, a check sheet is often used as the input to the next tool, called the Pareto chart. The check sheet is most often tabular in format as presented in Example 2. 

Deming principles, or other soundly based quality management concepts, cannot be applied without the use of statistical control methods cause-and-effect diagrams, control charts, run (trend) charts, Pareto charts, flow charts, check sheets, histograms. Juran and Gryna are very good on this subject. So also are Cyrus Derman and Sheldon M. Ross in Statistical Aspects of Quality Control.
