Qualitative descriptive analysis

Odour can be described using a number of different dimensions, each of which can be measured using different sensory tests threshold, intensity and quality (odour profile or qualitative descriptive analysis). 

Although the Hiickel method has now been supplanted by more complete treatments for theoretical analysis of organic reactions, the pictures of the n orbitals of both linear and cyclic conjugated polyene systems that it provides are correct as to symmetry and the relative energy of the orbitals. In many reactions where the n system is the primary site of reactivity, these orbitals correctly describe the behavior of the systems. For that reason, the reader should develop a familiarity with the qualitative description of the n orbitals of typical linear polyenes and conjugated cyclic hydrocarbons. These orbitals will be the basis for further discussion in Chapters 9 and 11. 

To give a qualitative description of various boiling mechanisms and facilitate the empirical correlation of data, it is necessary to employ dimensional analysis. 

Three critical parameters, which together describe the responsiveness of a pathway to changes in metabolic circumstances, lie at the center of metabolic control analysis. We turn now to a qualitative description of these parameters and their meaning in the context of a living cell. In Box 15-3 we will provide a more rigorous quantitative discussion. 

A detailed analysis of the dynamics of polyatomic photodissociation presents a formidable problem. For this reason a number of simplified models have been introduced. Based on these models, one can obtain a qualitative description of the phenomenon, and of some of the important aspects.

The use of statistical tests to analyze and quantify the significance of sample data is widespread in the study of biological systems where precise physical models are not readily available. Statistical tests are used in conjunction with measured data as an aid to understanding the significance of a result. Their aid in data analysis fills a need to answer the question of whether or not the inferences drawn from the data set are probable and statistically relevant. The statistical tests go further than a mere qualitative description of relevance. They are designed to provide a quantitative number for the probability that the stated hypothesis about the data is either true or false. In addition, they allow for the assessment of whether there are enough data to make a reasonable assumption about the system. 

A simple qualitative description of how fast reaction occurs can be taken from a direct observation of how long it takes for a certain percentage reaction to occur. But in a quantitative analysis rate must be precisely defined, and once this has been done it becomes apparent how inadequate the loose definition of rate in terms of percentage reaction actually is. 

The book begins with a discussion of the basic physico-chemical aspects of reactions utilised in qualitative inorganic analysis. A description of laboratory equipment follows, and operations which include semimicro and micro techniques, and simple electrochemical, spectroscopic and chromatographic methods. The reactions of the most important cations and anions are described, followed by a treatment of systematic qualitative analysis. Sample preparation, dissolution and fusion of insoluble materials are treated in detail. A separate chapter deals with the reactions of less common ions, with guidelines to their separation and identification in the course of systematic analysis. Finally, a simplified course of qualitative analysis is given this chapter will be particularly useful where the time allocated to qualitative analysis is limited. 

Up to this point, the analysis is rigorously correct and general it is simply a restatement of the Born-Von Karman expansion of the energy in terms of relative displacements—.see Eq. (8-17). However, we shall now make a major approximation in taking the force constants from the very simple valence force field that we described in Chapter 8. This will give us a clear and correct qualitative description of the vibration spectra and will even give semiquantitativc estimates of the frequencies. Afterward, we shall consider the influence of the many terms that are omitted in this simple model.

The color convention for all pictures is green for NH bonds, blue for lone pair electrons, and red for Rydberg electrons. Note that in some figures there are small red dots which correspond to core electrons. These features will be ignored in tables and in qualitative descriptions.
