Basis set dependence is important. The results in Table 16.1 were obtained for HF-LCAO calculations on pyridine. In each case, the geometry was optimized As a general rule, ab initio HF-LCAO calculations with small basis sets tend to underestimate the dipole moment, whilst extended basis sets overestimate it A treatment of electron correlation usually brings better agreement with experiment. [Pg.274]

Dipole moment data have provided valuable information for the study of the tautomerism of compounds such as isonicotinic acid, pyrid-4-one, and ethyl acetoacetate, However, this method must be used with discretion since it can lead to inconclusive results. Thus, the fact that 4-aminopyridine has a higher dipole moment than the algebraic sum of the dipole moments of pyridine and aniline was originally interpreted as proof that structure 54 exists with a strong contribution from 36, and it was stated that 55 w ould have a very low moment. Later, Angyal and AngyaF pointed out that the... [Pg.333]

Finally, two sets of physical properties have been correlated by the Hammett equation. Sharpe and Walker have shown that changes in dipole moment are approximately linearly correlated with ct-values, and Snyder has recently correlated the free energies of adsorption of a series of substituted pyridines with u-values. All the reaction constants for the series discussed are summarized in Table V. [Pg.232]

The triplet nitrenium ion, however, lacks symmetry but, unlike the excited triplet states of other azaaromatic systems such as pyridine, is surprisingly planar.283 Theoretical dipole moments for cyclopent[c]- and cyclopent[rf]azepine, and the molecular geometry of cyclopent[rf]-azepine, have been calculated using semiempirical ab initio methods.3... [Pg.116]

Sharp and Walker (36) have reported good linear plots of Mx - Mh for 3- and 4-substituted pyridines, pyridine-N-oxides and nitrobenzenes against the appropriate substituent constants. Charton (37) has reported correlations of dipole moments for substituted ethylenes and related compounds with eq. (1) using the oj, and Op constants. Best results were generally obtained with Op. [Pg.87]

The dipole moment of phosphabenzene is reinforced by the methyl group shown in (147) and increases it from 1.46 to 1.77 D thus it resembles pyridine, which has the heteroatom at the negative end of the dipole.181 The magnitudes and trends of the dipole moments of the methylphosphines have been investigated by MO studies and the dipoles partitioned into bond moments, bond polarization, and lone-pair moments.182 The reciprocal effects of the double bond and the phosphorus atom in... [Pg.269]

Two permanent merocyanines have been reported for the spiro-oxazines [85]. These were NOSH heteroanellated by imidazo [l,2-a]pyridine and imidazo [l,2-a]pyrimadine. Several tests have been conducted to determine the nature of these species. H -NMR data show that the indoline nitrogen is not highly charged and the crystal structure indicates that the ground state is essentially the quinoidal form. The most stable form was found to be the TTC isomeric form by x-ray analysis. The dipole moment of these permanent spiro-oxazine merocyanines was around 3.84 D, which is much lower than the values reported for spiropyran merocyanines. [Pg.382]

Not surprisingly, formalisms with very diffuse density functions tend to yield large electrostatic moments. This appears, in particular, to be true for the Hirshfeld formalism, in which each cos 1 term in the expansion (3.48) includes diffuse spherical harmonic functions with / = n, n — 2, n — 4,... (0, 1) with the radial factor rn. For instance when the refinement includes cos4 terms, monopoles and quadrupoles with radial functions containing a factor r4 are present. For pyridin-ium dicyanomethylide (Fig. 7.3), the dipole moment obtained with the coefficients from the Hirshfeld-type refinement is 62.7-10" 30 Cm (18.8 D), whereas the dipole moments from the spherical harmonic refinement, from integration in direct space, and the solution value (in dioxane), all cluster around 31 10 30 Cm (9.4 D) (Baert et al. 1982). [Pg.160]

Bipyridine and 3,4 -bipyridine have dipole moments of 3.84 and 2.38 D, respectively, whereas 3,3 -bipyridine is calculated to have a value of 4.22 D in the cisoid form and 2.76 D in the transoid form. 4,4 -Bipyridine has been found to have a dipole moment of less than 0.55 and 0.31 D. Because the planar molecule should have a zero dipole, it seems that 4,4 -bipyridine has a small angle ( 10°) of twist between the planes of the pyridine rings in solution. °... [Pg.293]
