Differential Activity of Genes as a Basis for Cell Differentiation 

The mutations causing the loss of the band s ability to form a puff represented a heterogeneous group. In regard to their functional character they could be joined into groups which differ in their expression in heterozygous combination with respective nonmutant strains. 

Group One These mutations demonstrated independent behavior. In the synapsis, i.e., in chromosome conjugation, a puff developed on both of the homologs. In the case of asynapsis, when conjugation is distorted, puffing showed up only in the nonmutant homolog.
