Psychosis clinical presentation

Schizophrenia is the most common functional psychosis, and there are as many clinical presentations of schizophrenia as there are individuals with the disorder. Despite numerous attempts to portray a stereotype in movies and on television, the stereotypic schizophrenic essentially does not exist. Moreover, schizophrenia does not mean... [Pg.1211]

Delirium and psychosis are reported with larger doses of FGAs or combinations of anticholinergics with FGAs. Chronic confusion and disorientation can occur in the elderly as aresnltof antipsychotic treatment. Unfortunately, the link is not always made between initiation of antipsychotic therapy, and the patient may be misdiagnosed with an organic mental disorder. This clinical presentation, called a pseudodementia, is easily reversible on discontinuation of the antipsychotic. [Pg.1226]

Treatment with atypical antipsychotics recently has been associated with an almost twofold increased mortality rate when used in elderly patients with dementia. Although these medications are not approved for treatment of dementia-related psychosis, such use is common in clinical practice (Herrmann and Lanctot 2005). At present, this appears to be a risk for the entire class. The risk associated with atypical antipsychotics is not statistically different from the risk associated with treatment with conventional antipsychotics (Gill et al. 2005). [Pg.106]

In the March 1986 safety review of the NDA (Kapit, 1986b), the FDA psychiatrist summarized five serious clinical events in the first 77 patients given Prozac, including 1 with paranoid psychosis and 1 with manic psychosis. There was also evidence in Eli Lilly s files—presented in my testimony—that some of the first human subjects responded very adversely to Prozac. In his deposition, Eli Lilly s top scientist, Ray Fuller (1994), confirmed the existence of an early in-house memo, in which he wrote ... [Pg.389]

HT2-type receptors have been a focus for investigations into its putative clinical importance for treatment of psychiatric disorders. h-HTg-type receptors have been implicated in several disorders like anxiety, depression and psychosis. As we are presently in the dark with respect to the mechanisms underlying the development of these disorders, future pharmacotherapy largely aims at alleviating symptoms. To that end various compounds, which have antagonistic properties on S-HTj-type receptors, are currently tested in clinical studies. [Pg.209]
