Psychological adaptation

Although empirical studies usually present and explain these two forms of adaptation using the same theoretical assumptions, there are reasons to believe that they are conceptually different. This distinction is made on the grounds that psychological adaptation can be analyzed better within a psychopathological approach whereas sociocultural adaptation would be better dealt with by the social skills theories (Ward, 1996).

As far as practical, the HR function should recruit, evaluate, and place the right person in the right job in terms of physical ability and psychological adaptability. Incorporate into job descriptions specific physical requirements, known hazards, and special abilities required for optimum performance. HR professionals must identify all hazardous occupations and determine the knowledge, skills, abilities, physical requirements, and medical standards required to perform the job in a safe manner. All employees must receive appropriate orientation, training, and education necessary to support safe job accomplishments. 

Figure 15.2 illustrates how person factors interact wdth the basic activator-behavior-consequence model of behavior-based psychology (adapted from Kreitner, 1982). As detailed earlier, activators direct behavior (Chapter 10) and consequences motivate behavior (Chapter 11). However, as shown in Figure 15.2, these events are first filtered through the person.
