Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit

A 15-year-old woman intentionally took 10 modified-release tablets of diltiazem 200 mg. She developed hypertension, oliguria, pulmonary edema, and respiratory distress syndrome, and required mechanical ventilation for 3 days, besides intravenous calcium, dopamine, and noradrenaline. After 5 days in an intensive care unit, she was transferred to a psychiatric hospital in good physical condition (22). 

Psychiatric In a prospective study of the use of benzodiazepines or opioids in relation to the incidence and duration of delirium in 304 admissions to an intensive care unit, 72% of patients had delirium on their first day of admission and lasting a median of 3 days [4 ]. After controlling for baseline dementia, use of haloperidol, and health status, the use of either a benzodiazepine or an opioid within 48 hours was associated with the duration of delirium and in those without pre-existing dementia, there was a 142% increase in the rate of delirium.
