Mites are responsible for mange or scabies. This dermatitic disease is characterized by itching, alopecia (baldness) and hyperplasia (excessive tissue formation) of the epidermis with consequent scaling off of the superficial skin layers. Rubbing and scratching by the host to relieve the itching can result in deeper wounds which are open to bacterial complications. Psoroptic mange in sheep is particularly destructive and is notifiable in Britain. [Pg.216]

Studies into the method of action of essential oils as insect repellents are currently underway that may further help in the development of new products. Recently, the results of an investigation were reported on the method of action of the acaricidal properties of Lavandula angustifolia Miller essential oil and of linalool (60), one of its main components, against Psoroptes cuniculi [195]. The study confirms the anti-mite properties of lavender essential oil and of linalool (60) by inhalation, indicating an additional route for possible use of these substances both for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes. Also, the method of action of the toxicity of citrus peel oils to several insect species has recently been investigated [196]. The results indicated that an efficient way to use citrus peel essential oils to control insects would be as a fumigant in relatively enclosed or air-tight systems. [Pg.612]

The OP dips (and sprays) have long been used for the treatment and attempted eradication of sheep scab. This disease has major animal welfare implications for the sheep and major economic implications for the farmer. The disease can result in loss of the fleece and severe lesions on the animal that are then open to secondary infection by bacteria and parasites. The disease is caused by the sheep scab mite Psoroptes ovis. Organophosphorus-based dips have long been used for the treatment and attempted eradication of the disease. In this process, animals are submerged in the dip bath fluid so that the entire body surface, including the head, is submerged. They then exit the bath and in... [Pg.292]
