Prototype hazard classification

Our prototype hazard classification system was intended to be based on three approaches, 1) look up the answer in a database (either ours or others), 2) infer an answer by comparison of unclassified materials with materials whose class is already "known" with some degree of certainty, or 3) ask for sufficient input data (either basic properties or "test" data) on the material to allow calculation of the potential hazard from something akin to "first principles - an algorithmic or logical solution. 

The approach to developing metrics for process safety is analogous to those that might be used to assess Occupational Exposure risk. One can cite as well several indices that have been developed as metrics for estimating and ranking the safety of a given process or chemical reaction, such as the DOW fire and explosion index,the Stoessel index ° for hazard assessment and classification of chemical reactions, the Inherent Safety Index, the Prototype Index for Inherent Safety, amongst others. ... 

Finally, we will illustrate some of the points discussed by describing the development of a prototype expert system for hazardous materials classification and loss prevention engineering decision support.
