Protein safe intake

The accepted safe intake of acrylamide for the average person is 14 micrograms per day, although the World Health Organization estimates that a Western-style diet provides 70 micrograms per day. So should we worry about this The answer is probably no. It would appear that our body s natural detox defences are more than capable of disposing of this amount quite easily so we can continue to enjoy fried potatoes. If you are still worried, then you should always eat protein with your chips or fries because this can bind to acrylamide and prevent it entering the cells of the body. [Pg.124]

Biotin is widespread in foods, although its availability is affected somewhat by the presence of binding proteins. Biotin is required in only small amounts. Although US RDA values have not been established, the estimated safe and adequate intake of biotin is 30-100 g day -1 for adults. The Department of Health (1991) suggested that biotin intakes between 10 and 200 iig day-1 are safe and adequate. Biotin is reported to be non-toxic in amounts up to at least 10 mg day-1. [Pg.200]

A recent FAO/WHO/UNU committee (FAO/WHO/UNU, 1984) was even more explicit in the meaning it assigned to the safe level of intake of protein. This terminology was adopted in lieu of recommended intake in recognition of the fact that this intake was not really recommended. Instead, it was recommended that intakes be at or above the safe level of intake if low risk was to be obtained (FAO/WHO, 1973). The definitions offered for protein were as follows ... [Pg.107]

The descriptor of the protein requirements of a class of similar individuals is the safe level of intake, an amount that will meet or exceed the requirements of practically all the individuals in the group, explicitly taking into account individual variation in requirement. Following the lead of the 1971 Committee, the safe level is defined as the average +2 standard deviations (SD). [Pg.107]
