Two aliphatic acids possess, for grasses, many of the growth-distortion and toxicity effects associated with the synthetic auxins on dicotyledonous plants. Trichloroacetic acid and 2,2-dichloropropionic acid (dalapon), as the sodium salts, have been called grass "hormones or auxins, although Wilkinson184 could find no growth stimulation at low concentrations, and described dalapon as an antiauxin from its interference with indole-3-acetic acid effects. The herbicidal properties of trichloroacetate do not depend on its protein-denaturing ability, and those of 2,2-dichloropropionic acid involve, at least indirectly, the synthesis of pantothenic acid. [Pg.402]

According to Simon (1953) five different mechanisms can be distinguished by which dinitrophenols affect the living cells. These include oxidative phosphorylation and photosynthetic phosphorylation which are considered as their main effects. Dinitrophenols in addition affect glycolytic phosphorylation, respiration and fermentation reaction. There are at least two answers to question (i). First, abnormal proteins can arise in cells due to spontaneous denaturation, errors in protein synthesis, errors in post-translational processing, failure of the correct folding of the protein or damage by free radicals. They are then degraded and replaced by newly synthesised proteins. Secondly, turnover helps to maintain concentrations of free amino acids both within cells and in the blood. This is important to satisfy the requirements for synthesis of essential proteins and peptides (e.g. hormones) and some small nitrogen-containing compounds that play key roles in metabolism (see Table 8.4). [Pg.152]
