Process hazards strong oxidizers

Hazard May explode under confinement and high temperatures, but not readily detonated. Ventilate well. To fight fire, use large amounts of water. The material must be kept as cool as possible and removed from confinement and flooded with water in event of fire. Explodes more readily if contaminated with combustibles. Strong oxidizing agent. May be made resistant to flame and detonation by proprietary process involving addition of 5-10% ammonium phosphate. [Pg.71]

The Process Safety Beacon (CCPS, 2013) warns of the dangers associated with strong oxidizers such as sodium permanganate. If inadvertently mixed with reducing agents such as sodium thiosulfate, even in small quantities, an exothermic reaction will occur. The heat generated may be sufficient to create a serious hazard. [Pg.353]

This activity is particularly useful for degradation of strongly hazardous substances or recalcitrant pollutants that are difficult to remove in chemical or biochemical processes. In this respect any pathway leading to abatement of chromate(VI) pollution arouses interest. One such pathway seems to be created by cooperation between iron and chromium photocatalytic cycles, which were reported as effective in conversion of chromate(VI) into Crm species [20-23,97]. A synergistic photoreduction of CrVI and Cu11 mediated by Ti02 [98], or photocatalytic reduction of Crvl and oxidation of organic matter by environmental polyoxometallates as photocatalysts [99], may constitute alternative possibilities. [Pg.149]
