Proanthocyanidins plant kingdom, distribution

Proanthocyanidins are polymeric flavonoid compounds composed of flavan-3-ol subunits (Fig. II. 4.1), and are widely distributed in the plant kingdom, including plants that are important as a source of food (Santos-Buelga and Scalbert, 2000). They impart bitter and astringent properties. In addition, these compounds may have potential health effects (Santos-Buelga and Scalbert, 2000). [Pg.1273]

Phenolic compounds constitute one of the most numerous and widely distributed groups of phytochemicals in the plant kingdom. More than 8000 phenolic compounds have been described and this list continues to expand.49 Phenolic compounds exist as simple molecules, such as the phenolic acids, to highly polymerized structures, such as the proanthocyanidins. Harbome48 classified phenolics into 10 subclasses based upon their chemical structure these subclasses include the simple phenolics, phenolic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, and flavonoids, among others. It is well known that tea contains catechins besides caffeine. Although catechins are widely distributed in the plant kingdom, the catechin monomers in many plants coexist with larger amounts of dimeric to polymeric proanthocyanidins, which are comprised of catechin units connected by C-C bonds. However, the polyphenol composition of C. sinensis is unique, and mainly comprised of four monomeric catechins—(-)-epicatechin (1), (-)-epigallocatechin (2) and their galloyl esters. [Pg.59]

Anthocyanins are a proanthocyanidin-type of flavonoid distributed in various fruits. These anthocyanins are the most important visible plant pigments in the natural kingdom. Anthocyanins have been clinically used in many folklore medicines worldwide for the treatment of age-related diseases and other disease. This review presents the functionality of anthocyanins in relation to their chemistry, synthetic pathway, antioxidant activity, antitumor activity (including apoptosis-inducing activity), pharmacodynamics (absorption, metabolism, distribution, and excretion) and toxicity, and discusses their possible use as food and dietary supplements and usage in potential nutraceuticals. [Pg.4]
