Fe-S complexes have important functions in today s living systems, in enzymes such as the ferredoxins and oxidoreductases, as well as in electron transport proteins. It is striking that these redox reactions mainly involve elements and compounds such as CO, H2 and N2, which were probably also components of the primeval Earth s atmosphere. Thus, the assumption of an active involvement of Fe-S clusters in a (hypothetical) Fe-S world in processes which finally led to biogenesis appears completely reasonable We now have a background to the theory of the chemoau-totrophic origin of life . [Pg.194]

The chemical composition of the Earth s interior determined the character (the oxidation state) of the primeval atmosphere. If metallic iron had collected in the Earth s core in the early phase of the accretion, the exhalations from the interior of the Earth would have consisted mainly of CO2 and H20, since the gas from the interior could only have come into contact with FeO and Fe203 silicates in the mantle. If, however, metallic iron had been distributed throughout the mantle, the iron and the FeO silicates would have had a reductive influence on the gases the gas exhaled into the atmosphere would then have consisted of CH4, H2 and NH3 (Whittet, 1997). [Pg.29]

Only the lightest gases, such as hydrogen and helium, could easily escape the gravitational field of the Earth. In contrast to earlier assumptions, it is now believed that the young Earth probably had either no atmosphere at all or only a very thin one, since the proportion of the primeval solar nebula from which the terrestrial planets were formed consisted mainly of non-volatile substances. [Pg.33]
