Preventive conservation definition

A definition of art conservation has been stated by Ben Johnson, Head Conservator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Conservation can be defined as the application of science to the examination and treatment of objects of art and to the study of the environments in which they are placed. Art restoration is the portion of conservation which deals primarily with the treatment of objects. It should be understood that restoration does not imply an attempt to return the object to its original state but rather to prevent deterioration of the original materials while respecting their integrity (I). ... [Pg.185]

The EPA s preference for today and the foreseeable future is for businesses to engage in pollution prevention. By their definition, this is defined as the use of materials, processes, or practices that reduce or eliminate the creation of pollutants or wastes at the source. It includes practices that reduce the use of hazardous and nonhazardous materials, energy, water, or other resources as well as those that protect natural resources through conservation or more efficient use. Of course, most businesses today must reduce or eliminate their wastes to remain competitive. No one can afford to discard valuable raw materials as wastes. [Pg.369]

Various physical processes can complement the effect of SO2 and help to stabilize these wines (Section 9.4). Wine conservation at low temperatures (around 0°C) hinders but does not definitively inhibit yeast development, but heating wine at 50-55°C for several minutes can totally destroy the yeast population (Section 4.4). Heat-sterilized wines must be stored in sterile conditions to prevent subsequent contamination. Sterile storage, however, poses practical problems and is not possible in wooden casks (Volume 2, Section 12.2.3). [Pg.457]
