Prestone antifreeze

Air Products, and Electro Metallurgical to form the Union Carbide Carbon Company. In 1957, the company s name was shortened to Union Carbide. In addition to batteries, some of its major products include Prestone antifreeze, Glad wrap, and Champion spark plugs. Union Carbide s reputation was severely hurt in 1984 when its pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, had an accident resulting in the death of2,500 Indians. In February of 2001, a merger between Union Carbide and Dow was completed, making Union Carbide a subsidiary of Dow. [Pg.304]

Hiis is simply antifreeze, such as Prestone, Zerex, etc. Always read the can to make sure the ingredient is ethylene glycol. It is a colorless, syrupy liquid with a sweetish taste. It mixes well with both water and alcohol. [Pg.51]

A commodity may become a pseudocommodity by the addition of additives or other performance-enhancing chemicals. For example, ethylene glycol—a commodity chemical—perhaps becomes a pseudocommodity such as Prestone or Zerex antifreeze with the addition of additives. In some of these cases, multiple brands may be packaged in the same facility but with proprietary additives used for each separate brand. There are numerous examples of this sort of activity with gasolines and motor oil. In the past oil companies have claimed that their gasolines were superior because of additives they contained (TCP Techron , etc.). [Pg.286]

About one third of the heat produced by an engine is lost through the exhaust, another third to produce propulsion, and the last third is removed by the coolant. Water has the highest heat capacity, so less needs to be used. However, it freezes easily and corrodes engines quickly. Early antifreezes were salt brines. They reduced the freezing problem, but enhanced the corrosion problem. Methanol and ethanol then were used, but they boiled away too easily and were quite flammable. In 1927, Prestone was introduced, which was ethylene glycol (HO-CHjCHj.OH) mixed with anticorrosion additives. [Pg.614]
