Preparation of the Plasma-Modified Polymer Surfaces

Four ways of polymer surface functionahzation were considered and the following surface compositions were expected (see Fig. 18.2)  

unspecific functionalization in the low-pressure oxygen plasma leading to different types of O-functional groups at various concentrations 

improvement of this unspecific O-functionahzation to a specific OH-function-ahzation using a post-plasma chemical reduction of carbonyl-containing groups to OH groups 

a pulsed plasma polymerization technique that provides homopolymer layers carrying adhesion-promoting functional groups 

pulsed plasma polymerization of copolymers from monomers with functional groups and neutral monomers for chain extension in this way, the concentration of single-type functional groups can be adjusted continuously.
