Preparation of a Rigid Polyurethane Foam

Safety precautions Before this experiment is carried out. Sect. 2.2.5 must be read as well as the material safety data sheets (MSDS) for aU chemicals and products used. 

In a 250 ml plastic beaker 10 g of a strongly branched polyester with a high OH number of about 350-370 (see Example 4.1b or commercial sample, e.g., Desmophen 4070 X from Bayer AG) and 15 g of methylene di(phenylisocyanate) (technical product, liquid mixture of the diisocyanate with poly-MDl, e.g.. 

A small amount of nonreacted isocyanate groups in the hardened foam can be detected by IR spectroscopy. 

Rigid polyurethane foams are mainly used as insulating and damping materials (construction industry, cooling equipment, ship construction).
