Vitamin D [1406-12-2] is a material that is formed ia the skin of animals upon kradiation by sunlight and serves as a precursor for metaboUtes that control the animal s calcium homeostasis and act ki other hormonal functions. Acid rain is the popular term for a very complex environmental problem. Over the past 25 years, evidence has accumulated on changes in aquatic life and soil pH in Scandinavia, Canada, and the northeastern United States. Many believe that these changes are caused by acidic deposition traceable to pollutant acid precursors that result from the burning of fossil fuels. Acid rain is only one component of acidic deposition, a more appropriate description of this phenomenon. Acidic deposition is the combined total of wet and dry deposition, with wet acidic deposition being commonly referred to as acid rain. [Pg.149]

There are numerous early scientific works concerning the presence of shock waves and the influence of explosions, impacts, and shock waves on matter. The earliest work, however, did not lead to a delineation of the phenomenon as a distinct scientific enterprise. Some emphasis has been placed inthis Section on the nature of theel trified interface since it is apparent that adsorption at the interface between the metal and solution is a precursor to the electrochemical reactions that constitute corrosion in aqueous solution. Coacervation occurs in tropoelastin solutions and is a precursor event in the assembly of elastin nanofibrils [42]. This phenomenon is thought to be mainly due to the interaction between hydro-phobic domains of tropoelastin. In scanning electron microscopy (SEM) picmres, nanofibril stmc-tures are visible in coacervate solutions of elastin-based peptides [37,43]. Indeed, Wright et al. [44] describe the self-association characteristics of multidomain proteins containing near-identical peptide repeat motifs. They suggest that this form of self-assembly occurs via specific intermolecular association, based on the repetition of identical or near-identical amino acid sequences. This specificity is consistent with the principle that ordered molecular assembhes are usually more stable than disordered ones, and with the idea that native-like interactions may be generally more favorable than nonnative ones in protein aggregates. [Pg.261]

Evidence exists that the relative solubility of amines and inhibitors in heterogeneous oil-water systems could be decisive in formation of nitrosamines and blocking these reactions, Nitrosopyrrolidine formation in bacon predominates in the adipose tissue despite the fact that its precursor, proline, predominates in the lean tissue (5,6,7). Mottram and Patterson (8) partly attribute this phenomenon to the fact that the adipose tissue furnishes a medium in which nitrosation is favored, Massey, et al, (9) found that the presence of decane in a model heterogeneous system caused a 20-fold increase in rate of nitrosamine formation from lipophilic dihexylamine, but had no effect on nitrosation of hydrophilic pyrrolidine. Ascorbic acid in the presence of decane enhanced the synthesis of nitrosamines from lipophilic amines, but had no effect on nitrosation of pyrrolidine. The oil-soluble inhibitor ascorbyl palmitate had little influence on the formation of nitrosamines in the presence or absence of decane. [Pg.150]
