Solanaceae is a cosmopolitan family. Though the species are distributed throughout the world, they occur, in greater concentrations, in tropical and warm temperate regions with centers of diversity occurring in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly in South America. Other center of speciation occurs in Australia and Africa, with relative few and less diverse species being found in Europe and Asia (Symon, 1981 D Arcy, 1991 Hawkes, 1992).
