Power generation, coal gasification technology

Low BTU gasification technology is commercially available for most types of biomass feedstocks and can be expected to have an impact on energy supplies by 1985. Many of these commercial processes are based on low BTU coal gasification technologies and the gas produced can best be used as fuel for supplying process heat, process steam or for electrical power generation.

In 1989, Dow Chemical created a separate company called Destec Energy to handle Dow s extensive activities in the area of power generation. The Dow coal gasification technology and facilities (LGTI) were transferred to Destec. In 1991, Destec became a publicly traded company, however, Dow maintains controlling stock ownership. 

Distinguishing Characteristics. The key advantage of the Texaco coal gasification technology is the extensive operating experience at full commercial scale. Furthermore, Cool Water is an IGCC power generation facility, operated by conventional electric utility staff and is one of the cleanest coal-fired power plants in the world.

Building large commercial coal gasification combined cycle units could be difficult based on the history traditional power generators have had with simpler chemical processes. Sequesting the C02 can be another technological challenge.
