Powdered detergents agglomeration

In applications such as the preparation of tableting feeds and the manufacture of detergent powders, the aim is to produce small agglomerates (usually 2 mm diameter and less) with improved flow, wetting, dispersing or dissolution properties. Figure 12-94a shows a cocurrent cone-based tall form chamber with roof gas disperser. This chamber design is used primarily with pressure nozzle atomization to produce powders of large particle sizes with a minimum of agglomeration. The chamber can be equipped with an oversize cone section to maximize powder discharge from the chamber bottom. This type of dryer is used for dyestuffs, baby foods, detergents, and instant coffee powder. 

Batch suspended solids agglomerators allow accurate adjustment of residual moisture, even if the drying rate drops drastically at low liquid content, and result in better control of overall product quality. Therefore, outside pharmaceutical applications, their main use is for baby formulae, special food products such as powdered cocoa, tea and coffee, fruit juice extracts, egg and milk powder, etc., for detergents as well as other cleaning reagents and chemicals.
