Potassium permanganate design

Berberinephenolbetaine (121) was first obtained by Pyman and designated as neoxyberberine (79). Acetoneberberine (119) was oxidized with potassium permanganate in aqueous acetone to give neoxyberberine acetone (120), the structure of which was established by Iwasa and Naruto (80). On treatment with hydrochloric acid followed by sodium hydroxide, 120 gave 121 (79-81), which was also obtained directly from 119 by oxidation with potassium permanganate or osmium tetroxide (Scheme 26) (80). 

The vital application of potassium permanganate as a potential oxidizing agent in an acidic medium mainly rests on the reactions designated by the following equations ...

Operation Purple was designed to identify and dismantle trafficking networks involved in the diversion of potassium permanganate from international trade. 

The presence of oxidizable materials in acetone and methanol that are associated with contaminations during manufacture and distribution can be evaluated by permanganate time. Oxidizable contaminants may adversely affect catalysts or ligand complexes which are sensitive to oxidation. Oxidizable substances reduce potassium permanganate to manganese oxide which is yellow. The method is designed to measure the time required to change color to the color of a standard.
