Potassium permanganate adsorbed

Potassium permanganate adsorbed on copper sulfate pentahydrate oxidizes dithiol 112 into 1,2-dithiepane 113 (Equation 35) <1998S1587>. 

Simple 1,2-dithiepanes are prepared by the oxidation of, -alkanedithiols using hydrogen peroxide, iodine, oxygen, or other oxidants . For example, potassium permanganate adsorbed on copper sulfate penta-hydrate oxidizes 1,5-pentanedithiol into 1,2-dithiepane 198 <1998S1587>.

This oxide is one of the most active catalytic agents for the oxidation of CO near room temperature, if it is not contaminated with adsorbed material in its preparation. Its activity was discovered by Whitesell and Frazer (12). This oxide represents probably the first successful low temperature simple catalyst of industrial importance. It was prepared by treatment of potassium permanganate with sulfuric acid, followed by treatment of the product with concentrated nitric acid. The precipitated hydrated oxide was carefully washed, oxidized, and dried. This yielded a material which was catalytically active for CO oxidation at a temperature as low as — 20°C. Specific treatments recommended include gastric lavage with 1 5,000 or 1 10,000 potassium permanganate followed by medicinal charcoal, with convulsions being controlled by phenobarbitone or anaesthesia. An alternative adsorbent in place of charcoal is a mixture of magnesium oxide, tannic acid and charcoal (1 1 2).
