Potassium nitrate KNO

A pyrotechnic composition contains one or more oxidizers in combination with one or more fuels. Oxidizers used in pyrotechnics, such as potassium nitrate, KNO, are soflds at room temperature and release oxygen when heated to elevated temperatures. The oxygen then combines with the fuel, and heat is generated by the resulting chemical reaction. Chemicals that release fluorine or chlorine on heating, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon)... [Pg.346]

For a good spark effect, the fuel must contain particles large enough to escape from the flame prior to complete combustion. Also, the oxidizer must not be too effective, or complete reaction will occur in the flame. Charcoal sparks are difficult to achieve with the hotter oxidizers potassium nitrate (KNO 3) -with its low flame temperatures - works best. Some gas production is required to achieve a good spark effect by assisting in the ejection of particles from the flame. Charcoi, other organic fuels and binders, and the nitrate ion can provide gas for this purpose. [Pg.86]

Sulfuric acid was one of the first chemicals to be produced industrially on a large scale. Until the early 1700s, sulfuric acid was produced in glass jars of several liters in which sulfur and potassium nitrate, KNO, were heated. Pyrite was often substituted for sulfur because of... [Pg.271]

Potassium nitrate, KNO, is written as a molecule, even though that material can t form in water. For this reason, there is anothertype of equation that is often used to describe reactions that involve ions. It is known as an ionic equation. Instead of writing the formulas for the substances as molecules (or salts), we will write the formulas for the ions that would be present in aqueous solution. If the previous equation is rewritten as an ionic equation, it will become... [Pg.251]

Potassium is essential to plant growth. Approximately 95% of mined potassium is used to manufacture the fertilizer potassium nitrate (KNOs). Potassium is also found in soil, where it is continuously replenished through decaying plants and animal waste. [Pg.61]

POTASSIUM NITRATE. KNO,. All 3003 and 5154 were reristant to solid potassium nitrate in labo-ratoiy tests conducted at 100% relative humidity at ambient temperature. In sunilar tests conducted at 54 C (130 F), sdid potasrium nitrate was veiycOTio-sive to allc 3003 and 5154. Aluminum alloy equip-... [Pg.624]
