Polymers containing phosphorus ligands

Since many inorganic compounds and complexes contain groups or atoms dealt with previously, the earlier chapters of this book should also be studied for any relevant information. For example, the chapters on silicon, boron, phosphorus and polymers contain a great deal of information relevant to inorganic compounds. Also, if interest is in, say, metal-olefin compounds, then sections dealing with alkenes should be examined, not only because the band positions of the free ligand should be known but also because some bands for these complexes may also be included in these sections. 

The Dupont method to prepare polymer-supported bidentate phosphorus-containing ligands makes use of Merrifield s resin (Scheme 10).69... 

An example of such an analysis of rhodium phosphine ligand anchored catalysts is presented (58). A survey scan of a copolymer containing a diphosphine ligand prior to introduction of the metal is shown in Figure 1, spectrum h. The presence of phosphorus in the polymer is evident from this spectrum. 

The asymmetric phosphorus-containing ligand DIOP, 2,2-0-isopropylidene-2,3-dihydroxy-l,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane, was incorporated into the chloromethylated polymers according to a literature procedure (20). The chloromethyl function was initially converted into the aldehyde, which was subsequently condensed with a tosylated diol, and the tosyl groups were ultimately converted into diphenylphosphine groups.
