Polymers and Polymerisable Compounds

The analysis of plastics comprises the identification of the monomers which participate in polymer formation and of products of degradation reactions [49] and also the detection of plastic additives like plasticisers, stabilisers and catalysts. Any simple alcohols, aldehydes, ketones or fatty acids occurring amongst these may be detected with the TLC procedures described elsewhere in the relevant chapters of this book. [Pg.657]

Bbaun and Vobendohbe [7] have carried out TLC of unsaturated polymerisable compoimds which are found also in the p3rrolysis products of high polymers. They chromatographed the addition compounds obtained by reacting 15—20 mg of the monomers with 120 mg mercuric acetate in methanol. Excess mercuric acetate can be reduced with hydrazine without the adducts suffering attack (those of a-methyl-styrene, vinyl acetate, vinylcarbazole and vinyl chloride are unstable [Pg.657]
