This Institute has 410 technical and research members of whom 80 are research scientists and 120 are assistants. Professor Ye Zuozhou, a chemist and an archivist, was one of the four deputy directors. He was the host for my recent visit. This Institute has nine divisions engaged in cellulose chemistry, marine organic chemistry, turpene chemistry, polymeric adhesives, polymer composites and polymeric grouting compounds.

In this book I have confined discussion to those polymeric materials which are cured by chemical reaction and which have found widespread application in the construction industry. As such, the book covers materials based on epoxies, polyurethanes, silicones, polysulphides, alkyds and polyesters. In addition, there is a chapter on hybrid polymer systems and one on acrylics. It is true that acrylic emulsions are not strictly thermosetting polymer systems, but their widespread use and importance made their exclusion difficult. These materials find use as coatings, sealants, adhesives, grouts, flooring compounds, repair compounds and waterproofing agents. 

All of these materials-brick, mortars and membranes-will be fully discussed in later chapters along with (1) Castables, grouts, and polymer concretes (2) Monolithics (troweled, sprayed and gunned linings) and (3) Expansion joint compounds, plus rigid plastic fabrications such as polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC. These components made from a whole host of materials are effectively used in a wide variety of industrial applications requiring superior chemical and thermal resistance.
