Polymer composites, in photonic

We are moving toward an era in which simulation and molecular theory will play an important role in the design of new polymers, composites, ceramics, and electronic and photonic materials [21, 22], Much of the theoretical and simulation work to date has asked questions of the form what are the properties of this particular model substance We need to invert this question and ask here is a specific need, for example a difficult or expensive separation—how can we use our theory and simulation techniques to design a material or process to best meet this need [22] One example would be... [Pg.147]

An important theme of this volume is the interrelationships among materials chemistry, photonic and optoelectronic properties, and device performance. The design and synthesis of novel polymer compositions and architectures aimed at enhanced properties are emphasized in some chapters. Other contributions feature the development of novel approaches to processing and fabrication of photonic and optoelectronic polymers into thin films, multilayers, fibers, waveguides, gratings, and device structures. These approaches, which emphasize polymer synthesis, processing, and device fabrication, are complementary and synergistic. [Pg.1]

Figure 10 shows the VUV absorption spectrum for polyethylene [16]. This is typical for polymers. The absorption coefficients are extremely high so the VUV raffiation is absorbed in a very shallow depth in the surface of the polymer. The absorbed photons will break surface bonds and generate surface free-radicals which can then react with the boundary layer gas, which will have a different composition than the plasma gas. [Pg.245]
