Polymer chemistry, high-resolution techniques

NMR is now a powerful, mature analytical tool which has widespread applications in all areas of synthetic chemistry, and polymer science is no exception. High-resolution solution-state NMR is a versatile technique which not only provides accurate qualitative and quantitative information on the chemical structure of a polymeric material, but is also capable of providing detailed information on certain aspects of chain structure which is not accessible by any other technique. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the physical basis of the NMR phenomenon, to outline the effects that determine the form of the NMR spectra of liquid-state samples, to describe the experimental techniques of solution-state NMR of polymers, and to introduce those aspects of the structure of synthetic polymers that are specially amenable to NMR analysis. [Pg.1]
