Polylactones (for an example, see Fig. 15.4) are synthetic analogues of naturally occurring ionophores such as enniatin (species that transport ions across biological membranes). Molecular mechanics calculations have been used to predict the stability and selectivity with respect to Li+, Na+ and K+, of a series of new poly-lactones1-496 Metal-ligand interactions were again modeled using a combination of van der Waals and electrostatic terms. [Pg.185]

To increase the alcohol functionalization, telomers of VAc were synthesized with 2-mercaptoethanol in the presence of 2-propanol as the solvent and also with an initiator bearing alcohol groups [276-278] (Scheme 55). Such oligomers were copolymerized with polylactone, leading to poly(vinyl acetate)-polylactone block copolymers. [Pg.103]

Polylactone and poly(vinyl alcohol) films are readily degraded by soil microorganisms, whereas the addition of iron or calcium accelerated the breakdown of polyethylene. Degradable mulches should break down into small brittle pieces which pass through harvesting machinery without difficulty, and do not interfere with subsequent planting. Effective funaigant mulches require reduced-porosity films which reduce the escape of volatile chemicals, i.e. nematocides, insecticides, herbicides, etc., and therefore allow for lower application rates. [Pg.468]

In a previous paper presented by Dr, Leborgne and Spassky, from the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, in Paris, it has been shown that it is now possible to prepare optically active polylactones by a "stereoelective" polymerization process. It is the purpose of the present paper to indicate important differences in properties between the optically active and the racemic poly(a-methyl-a-n-propyl-3-propiolactone) (PMPPL). Results will be presented concerning the crystallization and melting properties, as well as the dynamic and transient mechanical properties of these polymers. [Pg.259]
