Nitrated glycols, especially the lower members such as ethylene-, propylene, tri-ethylene-, and diethyleneglycol nitrates, are used in expl and proplnt compns. Nitrates of the higher glycols, or polyglycols, were proposed as ingredients of Diesel fuels in order to raise their "cetane number (See Vol 2 of Encycl, p C145-R Analysis and Test Methods.

Indeed most polymers are receptive to attack including cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate, polycaprolactone, polyethylene succinate, polyethylene adipate, polyvinyl alcohol, polybutadiene, styrene butadiene, butyl acrylonitrile, butadiene acrylonitrile, polyester polyurethanes, polyacetate, polyglycollate, polydioxanone and Nylon 2,6. 

Additives are used to coat the metal surfaces and prevent O2 and acids from reacting and to prevent foaming. These include borates, molybdates, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, silicates, amines, triazoles, and thiazoles. Acids are formed by Cl, 804 and the oxidation products of ethylene glycol at high temperatures. Foaming is caused by entrapped air and is retarded by silicones, polyglycols, or oil. Most of the air comes from an improperly filled overflow container. 

This first liquid inks used for inkjet decoration met the basic requirements for fine droplets application such as low viscosity, moderate surface tension, a high color covering capacity, and nontoxic solvents. These early ink formulations were sometimes based on suspensions such as transition metal octanoates in octane or metal nitrate aqueous solutions corrected by polyglycols. Some ink patents for inkjet ceramic applications appeared in 2001 [59-61].
